Anniversary Toast

I love that I am German (and I know it!).  Germans love to celebrate in big ways (think Oktoberfest!). Today is my Grandparents' 65th Wedding Anniversary.  Though they are not celebrating here on Earth, I know they are celebrating Heaven with God and all the choirs of angels. Grandpa was 100% German and loved a good party, just like every other German! I remember growing up Grandma would make the best apple pies.  I don't have her recipe but I thought I would try my hand at making some Apple Strudel (a German dessert).  mmmm....

Apple Strudel
adapted from: http://www.jaseyscrazydaisy.com/2012/09/apple-strudel-crescent-bars.html

Crust
1 pkg Crescent rolls

Filling
4 cups peeled and thinly sliced baking apples
1 t lemon juice
1/4 cup flour
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 t pumpkin pie spice (I used apple pie spice)
1/2 t cinnamon

Topping
1/2 cup flour
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup butter, cold

Glaze
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 T milk
1/4 t almond extract

Preheat oven to 350.  Spray 9x13 pan with cooking spray.  Spread out rolls, sealing seams.  In a bag/bowl combine lemon juice and apples. Combine flour, sugar and spices in another bowl.  Sprinkle over all apples, coating well. Spread evenly over rolls.  For the topping cut butter into sugar and flour.  Sprinkle evenly over apples and rolls.  Bake for about 35 minutes or so until golden brown.  (NOTE: I may braid more rolls and place over top apples and filling just for a lattice look.)  When done remove from oven.  Cool slighty and drizzle with glaze (combine powdered sugar, milk and almond extract until smooth).

  1. What a fun way to celebrate - we're having German chocolate cake - more because that's what Tom asked for his birthday than because of the Grandpa connection. I love that his birthday is on their anniversary - I won't ever forget the day. Enjoy the strudel... God bless!
