Last year I mentioned our family tradition of making cookies with Mom throughout the season of Advent. I am trying to do it again this year with the munchkins. This recipe was one of my favorites. I think others are turned off from this mixture of strange combination of ingredients. Just the same it is delicious. These cookies were one of my grandma's specialties every year at Christmas.
Great Grandma D's GumDrop Cookies
1 cup butter/margarine, softened
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
2 eggs
1 t vanilla
1/4 cup ketchup
2 3/4 cup flour
1/2 t soda
1/4 t salt
1 1/3 cup mini gum drops (1 1/2 pounds)
Preheat oven to 350. Cream together butter and sugars. Stir in eggs, vanilla and ketchup. Combine flour, soda and salt in another bowl. Mix into wet ingredients thoroughly. Fold in gum drops. Drop by 1/4 cup-fuls onto greased cookie sheet (I going to to try and make them smaller this year). Bake 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
The ketchup is a very interesting addition - I imagine that it is there mainly for color? Do these turn out slightly pink? I might have to give these a whirl!
