Familiar Classic With A Twist

Today was cold and rainy all day. When I saw the wet sidewalk/driveway, I thought to myself "It has to crockpot day." I love it when smells start permeating the entire house throughout the day. This meal smelled so Heavenly all day. This recipe was SO good.

Tamale Pie

Meat
1 large onion, diced
1 pound ground beef
1 jalapeno, minced (or 7 slices)
15 oz can tomatoes
10 oz can tomatoes with chilies
15 oz canned beans (recipe says red kidney - I only had black)
1 T (heaping) chili powder
1 t ground cumin (my addition)

Dumplings
2/3 cup milk
2 T oil
2 t baking powder
1/2 cup cornmeal (took closer to a cup to get the consistency I wanted)
1/2 t salt

Brown beef with onion and jalapeno; drain grease. Dump all remaining ingredients though cumin into crockpot. Cook on low for 8-9hours (you may have to add an additional 1/2 cup water). After allotted time, combine remaining ingredients (I made more...1 1/2 times this recipe, using 2 cups cornmeal.) Drop 1/4 cup-fulls over meat mixture. Cook on high another 20 minutes. Garnish with grated cheddar cheese, salsa and sour cream.
